Review: Scared of Beautiful (Scared Series, Book 1) by Jacqueline Abrahams

Scared of BeautifulReviewed by Sandra Scholes

Synopsis: Maia and Jackson seem to be two different people walking a different path. Maia wants to go to college without anyone bothering her. She has a need to escape her privileged upbringing of wealth and control to live her life the way she always wanted to. Jackson feels rejected after his high school sweetheart left. The result is he turned into a guy who has one-night stands with many girls until he admits to himself that he made a mistake and decides to go to college and study, leaving female attention and dating aside due to the problems they bring.

Then the two of them meet – at the same college.

Review: As expected, Maia and Jackson are very different people. She’s rich and privileged with all the trappings of her high social status while he’s hot and comes from a normal background. The two of them shouldn’t get on in theory, but we are talking about a romance novel here and by these standards, they are bound to hook up.

Maia is an in your face type who puts up a defensive wall around everyone she comes across at college, pretending that her life is alright when she knows something is missing, a man she can love and trust. Jackson has come to study and do well at college, but when he meets her, he goes back to his cocky and arrogant self. The more he gets to know her, however, the more she sees him for what he is, and in a way they actually do get on.

The idea that their coming together isn’t love at first sight is interesting as it isn’t other than mere sexual attraction; there is no reason why they should have got together in the first place. Maia struck me as a troubled woman from the start. She tends to hide it behind a bitchy, snobbish attitude, but Jackson notices this and in his own way tries to take her down to her most basic level to find she is also an emotional wreck.

Good Bits:

  • Hits the reader emotionally
  • Well developed characters
  • They are an opposites attract love match that surprisingly works

Summary: Although the characters can be seen as tough to get used to as their personalities aren’t that likeable, once Jackson takes apart Maia’s wall of nastiness and pretence, I started to like them more. The bitchiness is seen as more of a misunderstanding than anything else. As a debut novel in the Scared series, I enjoyed it as it played out different to the usual romance novels I normally read and look forward to reading more by this author.
